What’s Included in a Boiler Service Plan and Who Benefits Most?
editA boiler service plan usually includes the annual boiler service, spread into monthly payments, and often some level of repair cover: discounted or included labour, parts for the boiler, and sometimes the wider heating system. The exact contents vary widely between providers, so the name on the plan tells you little. The detail does.
Service plans suit people who want the annual service booked and budgeted automatically, households with older boilers out of warranty, and landlords who want predictable costs. Our service plans page sets out exactly what ours include.#
The common levels of cover
| Level | Usually includes | Suits |
| Service only | Annual service, reminders, sometimes a repair discount | Newer boilers under warranty |
| Service plus boiler repairs | Annual service plus parts and labour for boiler faults | Boilers out of warranty |
| Full heating cover | Boiler plus controls, pump, valves and sometimes radiators | Older systems, landlords |
What a service involves
Whatever the plan, the annual service itself should be thorough. For a gas or LPG boiler, that means inspecting and cleaning the burner and heat exchanger, checking combustion with a flue gas analyser, testing safety devices and checking the flue. For an oil boiler, it also means replacing the nozzle, changing filters and cleaning soot from the heat exchanger.
Who benefits most
- Homeowners with boilers out of warranty, where a single repair can be costly
- People who forget to book servicing, since a plan keeps it on schedule and protects warranties
- Oil and LPG households in rural areas, where yearly servicing matters even more
- Landlords, for predictable maintenance costs across properties
- Anyone who prefers a fixed monthly cost over irregular bills
Who might not need one
- Owners of brand-new boilers under a comprehensive manufacturer warranty may only need the service itself
- Households with savings set aside for repairs, comfortable with the risk
- Boilers near the end of their life, where saving towards a replacement may be better
Service plans for oil, LPG and gas
Around Alresford, Stockbridge, Romsey and the villages towards Salisbury, many homes are off the gas grid and rely on oil or LPG. Not every service plan covers these fuels, so check yours names your boiler type. We work on oil boilers as well as gas and LPG systems.
The small print to check
- Is the annual service included in the monthly price?
- What parts and systems are covered, and what’s excluded?
- Is there a call-out charge or excess?
- Is there a limit on claims or repair value?
- Is the boiler inspected before cover starts?
- What’s the minimum term, and what does it cost to cancel?
- What happens if the boiler can’t be repaired?
Pre-existing faults are rarely covered.
Frequently asked questions
Is a service plan the same as boiler insurance?
Not always. A service plan from a heating company focuses on maintenance and often repairs, carried out by that company’s engineers. Insurance-based cover may be provided by an insurer through a network of engineers. The terms and who you deal with differ.
Does a service plan cover a new boiler if mine breaks?
Usually not. Most plans cover repairs, not replacement. Check whether any contribution towards replacement is included.
Can landlords use a service plan?
Often yes. A service plan doesn’t replace the landlord’s legal annual gas safety check, although both can often be done at the same visit.
